strategy comparison
Long Condor vs Butterfly Spread
Both are debit pin trades.
Side by side
Same eight dimensions for both structures — outlook, risk, Greeks, capital, complexity, and the IV environment each one wants.
| Dimension | Long Condor | Butterfly Spread |
|---|---|---|
| Outlook | neutral | neutral |
| Max profit | Width of inner spread - debit paid | Width of spread - premium paid |
| Max loss | Net debit paid | Premium paid |
| Breakevens | Inner strikes +/- max profit | Middle strike +/- max profit |
| Greeks exposure | Delta-neutral; low net vega; decay helps only while price sits inside the inner strikes. | Delta-neutral at the body; small positive theta late, low net vega, gamma concentrated at the wings. |
| Capital / margin | Net debit paid; no margin. | Small net debit; no margin. |
| Complexity | expert | advanced |
| Best IV environment | Low-to-mid IV — cheap wings keep the debit small. | Most regimes — the trade targets a pin at the body, not an IV level. |

The verdict
When to choose which
Both are debit pin trades. Choose the butterfly when you have one precise target — cheap, peaky payoff, all-or-nothing character at the body; choose the long condor when you want a plateau instead of a peak — the two middle strikes give you a whole zone of max profit, for a slightly higher debit. Butterfly for precision, condor for zone.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the condor cost more than the butterfly?
Its inner short strikes are further from the money and spread apart, so you sell less premium against the wings — the debit is higher, but max profit covers a range instead of one price.
Which is more forgiving near expiration?
The condor — the underlying can settle anywhere between the inner strikes for full profit. A butterfly needs the pin.
Do both avoid early assignment?
Largely — all legs are typically out of or near the money until expiry, making both clean debit structures relative to their credit cousins. Deep ITM inner strikes on the condor are the exception to watch.
