The verdict

When to choose which

A straddle is a long call plus a long put at the same strike. Choose the long call when you have a directional view — you pay for one leg and keep the full upside; choose the straddle when direction is genuinely unknowable but magnitude is not — you pay double premium for the right to profit either way. Beginners often buy straddles when a call matches their actual view and pay for an option they do not need.

Frequently asked questions

Is a straddle just a hedged long call?

No — it is a bet on volatility, not direction. The put is not insurance for the call; both legs need the combined move to exceed the combined premium.

Which loses less in a slow drift upward?

The long call. In a straddle, the call's gain is partly eaten by the put's decay — the straddle needs speed, not just direction.

When is the straddle clearly the right tool?

Ahead of binary events with unknowable sign but knowable magnitude — results, rulings, product launches — and when IV rank is low enough that the market has not already charged you for the move.
