Best options paper trading platforms (September 2026)

Five platforms, five criteria, hands-on. One of them is ours — and it does not win every category. That is the point: a comparison that always crowns its owner is an ad.

Disclosure: FainTrading is our product. It is rated with the same criteria, in the same table, and loses categories below — research breadth to thinkorswim, broker coverage to native broker platforms. No affiliate links; the external links go to each platform's own site. Ratings are editorial.

How we rate

Five criteria, no vibes

Fill realism

Does the simulator make you pay the spread, commissions and assignment risk — or does it fill at the mid and flatter every result?

Greeks depth

Per-position and portfolio greeks, IV context (rank/surface), and what-if analysis available in the paper environment.

Education path

Is there a structured progression — quizzes, verified completion, gating — or unstructured content you must self-direct through?

Broker connection

Can the same tooling carry to a live account, at which brokers, and does anything transfer?

Price

All-in monthly cost of the paper-trading-capable tier, at published September 2026 pricing.

The scores

1–5 per criterion, September 2026. Order is editorial; FainTrading is listed third, not first.

Who wins what

  • Fill realismFainTradingThe only documented dual-P&L friction model in the group.
  • Greeks depththinkorswim paperMoneyResearch and analytics breadth we do not match.
  • Education pathFainTradingStructured, quiz-gated, certificated — no one else gates progression.

Platform by platform

thinkorswim paperMoney (Schwab)

Free with a Schwab account

The deepest trading desktop made available to paper traders, with the weakest fill engine of the group.

Strengths

  • Research and analytics breadth nothing else here matches: analyze tabs, thinkBack, full portfolio modeling
  • Native path from paper to a live Schwab account with the exact same platform
  • Professional-grade order types and chains

Limitations

  • Paper fills are widely and repeatedly reported as unrealistic, especially on illiquid names — the classic mid-fill flattery
  • The learning curve is a cliff; the education center is a library, not a path
  • Desktop-first: heavy client, dated UI

tastytrade (incl. Dough)

Free platform; per-contract commissions

A constant free strategy-content stream tightly coupled to the brokerage — enormous, but unstructured.

Strengths

  • Unmatched volume of free options education (daily live programming, research library)
  • Real brokerage engine behind the practice environment; paper-to-live is native
  • Curves and positioning tools built for defined-risk structures

Limitations

  • Practice and analysis tools assume good fills; no friction modeling comparable to a dual-P&L backtest
  • Steep platform learning curve, and the content firehose has no progression, quizzes or gating
  • Style is momentum-friendly; community skepticism about overtrading incentives is long-standing

FainTrading

Free; Pro EUR 14.99/mo

School, news, and a simulated practice account. Dummy option prices and virtual cash. No broker.

Strengths

  • Dual-P&L Honest-Fill backtester: spread capture by delta/DTE, commission schedule, assignment estimate, earnings IV-crush from historical ratios — methodology published in full
  • A structured school with quizzes and verifiable certificates
  • A practice journal for simulated positions and P&L.
  • Simulated option chain. No broker and no real orders.

Limitations

  • Research tooling is narrower than thinkorswim's — no desktop, no options-historical backtesting terminal, fewer screeners
  • Prices are simulated. There is no live broker feed.
  • US-listed options focus; no futures or European-listed options in the paper engine

Tradier

From ~USD 10/mo subscription

A clean brokerage with a solid sandbox and a best-in-class API — and essentially no education layer.

Strengths

  • Straightforward brokerage with unlimited commission-free options on the subscription plan
  • Excellent REST API — the strongest programmatic access in this group
  • Simple, fast interface with a real sandbox environment

Limitations

  • Pass-through exchange and regulatory fees are a recurring complaint; all-in cost is higher than the headline
  • Chain greeks only; no portfolio-level what-if or friction modeling
  • No structured education — you arrive already knowing what you are doing

OptionStrat

USD 29–49/mo

The best-looking options visualization in the set, with a simulator that stays closer to the mid than its users assume.

Strengths

  • Best-in-class strategy visualization: payoff, greeks over time, IV-crush forecasts drawn intuitively
  • Strong strategy scanner and premade strategy templates
  • Approachable for beginners building first multi-leg structures

Limitations

  • The simulator applies simple slippage rather than a documented friction model — no dual-P&L honest-fill view
  • Education is a built-in learning center, not a gated path; no verified progression
  • Broker connectivity is limited relative to native broker platforms

Methodology

How this was tested

Each platform's paper-trading environment and pricing page were tested hands-on in September 2026 (free tier or trial where available). Fill-realism scoring weighs the documented fill mechanics — mid-price fills score low, a published friction model scores high. Education-path scoring requires structure a beginner can follow with verified progression, not content volume. Pricing reflects published list prices at test time, excluding promos.

This comparison is re-tested quarterly — next re-test December 2026. Scores change when products change, in either direction. The September 2026 edition is the first; the criteria set is fixed so future editions stay comparable.

Our pitch, in one paragraph

If you want the deepest research desktop and already broker at Schwab, use paperMoney. If you want a free content firehose next to a live account, use tastytrade. If you want School, News, and simulated Practice with dummy prices, that is FainTrading.

Risk warning

Options involve substantial risk of loss and are not suitable for all investors. Past performance — actual or simulated — is not indicative of future results. Nothing here is investment advice.
