The verdict

When to choose which

The ZEBRA (zero extrinsic back ratio) is a synthetic stock position built from calls — buy two at the money, sell one in the money to strip the extrinsic. Choose the long call when you want leveraged convexity and can tolerate theta; choose the ZEBRA when what you actually want is stock-like delta (~75) with defined risk and near-zero extrinsic bleed. ZEBRA replaces stock; a long call is a bet, not a replacement.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the ZEBRA sell the ITM call?

To cancel the extrinsic value of the two ATM calls. The short ITM leg carries intrinsic-plus-extrinsic; netted together the structure holds delta while shedding most time-value cost.

Which loses less if the stock goes sideways?

The ZEBRA — that is its design. A long call can lose its entire extrinsic to decay; the ZEBRA holds value like stock because it carries almost none.

Which profits more in a sharp rally?

Per dollar invested, the long call — more convexity. In absolute delta terms the ZEBRA moves like roughly 75 shares and keeps moving linearly, which is what stock replacement is for.
